Context
We often talk about the digital as being off in its own world, separate and foreign to the one we inhabit. I believe digital technologies are as human and real as the houses we live in and roads we travel along. There can be warmth in pixels and bits that are used with care and intention, just as with any other building materials.
Autonoetic
psychology
: relating to or characterized by the capacity to be aware of one’s own existence as an entity in time (Among the capacities thought to be uniquely human are autonoetic consciousness, the aspect of self-awareness that allows us to imagine our own experiences in different places at other times … — R. Shayna Rosenbaum et al., Science, 23 Nov. 2007)
(via Merriam Webster) on their neighbours with a human quality.
Autonoetic is connected to the mental ability to place oneself in time, such as an imaged past or future. This relates to how the glyphs switch to alternates based on their neighbours with a human quality.
Abstract
A series of modular digital typefaces that use contextual alternates and open type programming to create interactivity and spontaneity. The typefaces have a human quality in regards to how the letters interact and react to each other while maintaining a digital aesthetic. Some of the letterforms have also been translated into analog forms through the use of processes including letterpress and laser cutting.
